I remember one boy back when we first began to work about 4 years ago with the PARK Program was an absolute terror. He rarely made it through the whole hour of soccer without being sent in. Recently, this same boy is a changed young man—he is pleasant, friendly, kind and thoughtful. It’s been awesome to see these kids grow up into thoughtful young people.
It has been a joy for the Seahorses to partner with the City of La Mirada and the PARK program in providing a fun environment for the kids to learn about soccer but also about Character Values. Most weeks our time begins with a lesson about character. They are given a lesson sheet. The children are encouraged to take these sheets home and go over them with their parents. We then play soccer and build relationships. The kids have come to games, camp, and a tournament where the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared.
After a tournament, one of the leaders Richard formed the Frontier Park Soccer Club. The kids started watching soccer videos and playing every day. Their ability improved noticeably. Richard also provided jerseys for the kids to wear during the club time.
The Seahorses extend a huge thank you to the City of La Mirada and in particular Vetta and Richard for their awesome partnership. Big thanks also to Sandra Valdez for her willingness to partner with the Seahorses and Evangelical Free Church in Fullerton in at Lemon Street Park After School Program. We look forward to continuing our relationships!
