Seahorses finish regular season with ninth consecutive win
Yet another shutout (nine this season) sends club into PDL North American playoffs
GRANADA HILLS, Calif. -- Jordan Arias’ goal in the 65th minute gave the Southern California Seahorses a 1-0 victory Saturday against the San Fernando Valley Quakes and completed the best regular season in the Seahorses’ six years in the USL Premier Development League. The Seahorses (13-3-0) finished the regular season as the Southwest Division champions, a title they clinched at home Wednesday. They go into the PDL national playoffs next weekend at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where they will play the second-place finisher in the Northwest Division—either BYU or the Abbotsford Rangers, which are one point apart with one game remaining. The win at San Fernando Valley on Saturday was the Seahorses’ ninth consecutive, the past eight being shutouts. Goalkeeper Eric Reed posted his nation-leading ninth shutout of the season. San Fernando Valley (10-5-1) finished third in the Southwest Division. Arias, who attended UC Riverside and Palm Springs High School, had only one other goal this season before his score Saturday. Playing midfield, Arias blasted a shot from 30 yards into the upper right corner to break the scoreless tie midway through the second half. Seahorses coach Todd Elkins played nearly his entire roster in preparation for the playoffs. It will be the Seahorses’ third playoff appearance in six seasons. In 2002, they won the Western Conference title and advanced to the national final four. In 2005, they were eliminated in the first round on a last-minute goal.
