Dream season comes to end Seahorses upended in first round of PDL North American playoffs PROVO, Utah -- A dream season for the Southern California Seahorses soccer team ended in the first round of the PDL North American playoffs Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the host BYU Cougars at BYU South Stadium.
The Seahorses (13-4-0) entered the playoffs on a nine-game winning streak, which netted them the Southwest Division title. But BYU (10-6-1), the second-place finisher in the Northwest Division, shut down the Seahorses offense in the second half with a smothering defense.
Forward Josh Hansen had tied the game for the Seahorses on a penalty kick at the end of the first half. In the 61st minute, BYU's Jacob Cavanaugh took a long pass and beat Seahorses goalkeeper Eric Reed for the game-winning goal.
BYU outshot the Seahorses, 11-6, on the night.
BYU advances to the second round to play Orange County Blue Star tonight in Provo.
"Even though this is a shocker for us, we had such a good season," says Paul Gizzi, Seahorses general manager.
