Gabaldon’s goal lifts Seahorses over Bakersfield
Stifling team defense helps bring second PDL victory
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 2, 2007) – Nikolas Gabaldon scored in the 35th minute and the Southern California Seahorses shut down the Bakersfield Brigade for a 1-0 victory Saturday night in a USL Premier Development League match at Bakersfield Christian High School.

The Seahorses (2-4-0) used a ball-control offense and smothering team defense to keep Bakersfield (3-4-0) from mounting much pressure against goalkeeper Vincent Licciardi.

Licciardi was making his first start for the Seahorses after playing for Bakersfield last year. He twice helped Bakersfield defeat the Seahorses last season. On Saturday, he made four saves against his former team to record the shutout.

Gabaldon (Fountain Valley High School, Hope International University) took a pass from John Lee just past the half line and maneuvered past a Brigade defender to about 20 yards from the goal. Gabaldon drilled a shot past goalkeeper Isreal [CQ] Cisneros and inside the post for the goal.

Veteran midfielder Jordan Arias expertly directed the Seahorses attack by distributing the ball, winning headers and controlling the field.

The Seahorses take a break from the PDL season to conduct a sports ministry outreach June 4-8 in San Vicente, Mexico. The team will conduct clinics and play in matches under the direction of assistant coach Paul Shedd.

The Seahorses return to PDL action next Saturday against the Los Angeles Storm at La Mirada High School at 7 p.m.

The Southern California Seahorses play in the USL Premier Development League, the only national league giving elite amateur players a professional experience within United Soccer Leagues while retaining their amateur status. Founded in 1983 as a club, the Seahorses have traveled to more than 30 countries. They draw many of their players from local colleges, clubs and international soccer programs.
