Seahorses offense responds in 2-2 tie with L.A. Storm Second-half burst and late goal provide positive finish LA MIRADA, Calif. (June 9, 2007) – Forward Steven Lenhart entered the match in the 55th minute and scored two goals to give the Southern California Seahorses a 2-2 tie with the Los Angeles Storm in a USL Premier Development League match Saturday night at La Mirada High School.
Lenhart (Azusa Pacific U.) pounced on a rebound after a shot by Sven Simon hit the crossbar in the 84th minute. Amid a battle for the ball, Lenhart emerged in position to slot it past Storm goalkeeper Patrick Lane to tie the match. The Seahorses (2-4-1) continued to pressure Lane the rest of the match but he made spectacular stops among his six saves to maintain the tie.
Ross Schunk had put the Storm ahead, 2-1, in the 73rd minute on an unassisted goal. His goal came just seven minutes after Lenhart’s first goal, which was assisted by Jordan Arias in the 66th minute. That tied the match at 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, Amir Shafii of the Storm scored in the 51st minute on an assist by Alex Bengard. The Storm (3-2-1) had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The Seahorses play road matches each of the next two Saturdays before returning home June 30 to face the San Jose Frogs at La Mirada High School’s Goodman Stadium.
The Southern California Seahorses play in the USL Premier Development League, the only national league giving elite amateur players a professional experience within United Soccer Leagues while retaining their amateur status. Founded in 1983 as a club, the Seahorses have traveled to more than 30 countries. They draw many of their players from local colleges, clubs and international soccer programs.
