Unbeaten streak comes to end
Valiant effort against second-place San Jose falls short
LA MIRADA, Calif. (June 30, 2007) –The Southern California Seahorses had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped in a 1-0 loss to the San Jose Frogs on Saturday night in a USL Premier Development League match at La Mirada High School.

Jeffrey Cosgriff’s goal from 15 yards in the 14th minute held up for San Jose (8-4-1), which is tied for second place in the 10-team Southwest Division. The Seahorses (3-5-2) were in seventh place going into Saturday’s match.

Until the loss to San Jose, the Seahorses had gone 2-0-2 during June, including victories over the Lancaster Rattlers and Bakersfield Brigade. However, they couldn’t keep the momentum against a determined San Jose squad that was trying to bounce back from a loss the night before against the Ventura County Fusion.
The first 30 minutes of play Saturday night were all in favor of San Jose. The Frogs applied the pressure to the Seahorses defense, which was without star backfield veteran Daniel Young (personal reasons). In the 14th minute, Cosgriff took a pass from Julian Alvarez across the top of the box and blasted it past Seahorses goalkeeper Greg Larson.

Larson (three saves) redeemed himself in the second half, especially in the 47th minute when he made a beautiful sliding play to stop a breakaway attempt by San Jose forward Savio Carrijo.

Meanwhile, the Seahorses ramped up their attack. Forward Nikolas Gabaldon headed a pass by J.T. Searles that nearly found the net, but Frogs goalkeeper Stefan Frei made a diving save to his left.

In the 78th minute, J.T. Searles hit a 20-yard shot past the defense that caromed off the crossbar. Searles had another chance in the 87th minute, but his free kick sailed high. During extra time, Ben Page’s shot from 18 yards was stopped by Frei.

The Seahorses outshot the Frogs, 9-7, for the match. Frei finished with four saves.

The Seahorses play the Los Angeles Storm on Thursday, July 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Citrus College in Azusa, and return home Friday, July 6, to face the Ventura County Fusion at La Mirada High School’s Goodman Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

The Southern California Seahorses play in the USL Premier Development League, the only national league giving elite amateur players a professional experience within United Soccer Leagues while retaining their amateur status. Founded in 1983 as a club, the Seahorses have traveled to more than 30 countries. They draw many of their players from local colleges, clubs and international soccer programs.
