The So. Cal. Seahorses,, a division of Missionary Athletes International (MAI), revealed a new logo today which reflects the identity that it shares with the parent organization and sibling offices Charlotte Eagles (Est. 1991), and Chicago Eagles (1997).

We had to be willing to give up on the attachment that we had with our old logos to reflect the new, unified identity.  You can see immediately the overall relationship while recognizing the individual characteristics of each of the identities.
— Patrick Stewart, CEO of MAI

The new logos are part of a rebranding process that extends across the entire organization. “The rebranding is the culmination of six years of a strategic planning process which MAI began in 2011” said CEO Patrick Stewart.  “We wanted to reflect the greater cohesiveness between MAI and its divisions through a new visual identity.  People may know the Charlotte Eagles, Chicago Eagles or Southern California Seahorses without realizing that they are related to each other and are part of a larger organization”.

MAI was founded in 1983 with a mission of using the global environment of soccer to communicate the message of Jesus Christ. MAI began operating the Southern California Seahorses in the same year, expanding to the East Coast as the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club in 1991 and to the Midwest in 1997 as the Chicago Eagles. In the past 35 years, tens of thousands of children have participated in MAI camps operated by the Charlotte Eagles, Chicago Eagles and Southern California Seahorses. In addition, over 200 international tours have ministered successfully in countries on six continents.

MAI engaged AkinsParker to design the logos in conjunction with an internal creative team representing each of the divisions.  AkinsParker has included key design elements that are reflective of MAI’s history and purpose in a creative way that communicates both unity and individual distinctives. The rebranding process will be implemented over the course of the year with teams expected to begin competing under the new design this summer.

We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to design the MAI family of brands. Our goal (and challenge) was to weave the rich history of the MAI organization with a new, fresh and modern athletics look and feel. Our team had fun developing these logos and hope they serve the brand well!

For further information, please contact Kelly Warner. MAI is a 501 (c ) (3) non-profit religious organization and is a member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).

The Seahorses extend their sincere congratulations to one of their PDL alumni. Aidan Apodaca finished his collegiate career at Cal Baptist University with an outstanding season. The culmination was receiving the highest honor as Division II Player of the Year. All these accomplishments led the MLS Philadelphia Unions to draft Aidan.

Seahorses are thrilled to congratulate former Seahorse PDL goalie, Eric Reed, on his new position at Malone University as Men’s Soccer Head Coach! Eric was a great contributor to the Seahorse team and community, and we look forward to cheering him on from afar. Congratulations Eric!

"I would like to thank Charlie Grimes and Malone University for giving me the opportunity to serve the men's soccer program," commented Reed.  "I am humbled and honored to join the Pioneer Family and to be a part of the incredible journey ahead of us.  God has set a special place in my heart for the marriage of faith and competition on the field.  We have been called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord (Romans 12:1), and my hope for this program is that we would display a passion for Christ in everything we do- from every word we speak to every tackle we win.  I believe that Malone is a special place packed with potential for the future and I am hungry to jump right in and get to work in the spirit of "Christ's Kingdom First."

For more on this, check out article on Malone University's site here. Congratulations Eric!!!

Welcome Back! Todd Elkins PDL Coach for 2018

Welcome Back!

Todd Elkins PDL Coach for 2018

After a four year hiatus, the So Cal Seahorses are glad to welcome back as their head coach, Todd Elkins. Todd left the Seahorses to coach both the men and women’s programs at Biola University. He has been able to relinquish his women’s head coach responsibilities to now only coach the men’s program.

Coach Elkins comes with a formidable record as a player and as a coach. His playing days had him at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he earned All-American honors. Post college days had Todd playing for the Charlotte Eagles USL winning the championship in 2000. He then helped get the PDL program started for the Seahorses as a player from 2001-2004. He then took over the head coaching position from 2005-2013.

The Seahorses are a unique PDL program in that we incorporate our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. One of the experiences our players have is going to Mexico where they get to put into practice what they are taught in using their soccer abilities for the Lord. Todd has been to 25 countries on mission’s trips which brings with

Seahorse Soccer Women’s Japan Outreach 2017 (July 6-22nd)

The Seahorses Soccer Club took a team to Japan for the 22nd consecutive year. This year we had the privilege of working in three locations.  We partnered with the Iwata Christ Church in Iwata (south of Tokyo) for five days where we played against the local Shizuoka Sangyo University club.  After witnessing some beautiful soccer we played the second ½ in a mixed manner.  Following the game we had incredible fellowship, games, & food back at the host church with Pastor Hasui.  The next day we put on a clinic & played against a top local Jr. Hi Boys club.  This club has decided to respond to the long-term relationship & our visits by coming to the USA (LA next August) where we will host them on “our turf”.

Kintai Team Picture.jpg

Following our time in Iwata we traveled south to Osaka where we partnered with the Japan Seahorse Soccer Club that has been growing for the past 8 years..  Masa & Chie Yokota have about 55 young kids.  This club also has now brought teams to LA where we have hosted them twice.  One of the highlights was visiting a local elementary School where we were taken on a tour of all 20 classes by the principal.  They have invited us to come onto campus and do a clinic at their school next year.

Last but not least, we ended out tour by providing a four day camp for 75 US Military children.  Due to the heat we were indoors in the gym.  Following each day of camp we had a time of chapel & skits where we were able to share the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.  After eating at the Mess  Hall with the Marines, we traveled off base to play a local Japanese University and of course eat & fellowship with them.  As a result of that exchange, a professor presented Paul Gizzi with a letter from the Mayor and the opportunity to bring the Seahorse team to his hometown next year to do clinics for all the elementary &Jr. High schools.  They even want to host us.

The soccer is excellent in Japan and quite technical.  What a great way to share the GOOD NEWS through “the beautiful game”  called Soccer.  We are already takingapplications for NEXT YEAR’S JAPAN OUTREACH.

We have coaches lined up, team mom’s, several players  & are planning to take this trip in the early & middle of July. If you know of any interested, go ONLINE & register at , you can CHECK OUT the trip on our BLOGSITE: or Contact Paul Gizzi:

For the last two seasons the Seahorses were privileged to have on their roster Patrick “Paddy”  Hoepp. Paddy joined us after attending Olivet Nazarene University in the Chicago area where he had a very successful soccer career. Paddy is originally from Germany where he developed his high skills in the game. His time with us was a blessing to those of us who got to be around him. This past season he went to Robert Morris University to be a “Grad Assistant”. He is in the middle of getting an MBA and part of his time there was spent in helping coach the men’s soccer program. As circumstances changed in the program, Paddy was just offered the promotion to “Associate Head Coach.” The saying says “The cream rises to the top.” Paddy has shown his excellent qualities and now is in a position to lead young men not much younger than him! Our prayers and best wishes are with Paddy in this challenge and endeavor!
